They are also skilled in making Tapa cloth which is made from the bark of a mulberry tree and often exchanged as gifts on formal occasions. On the other hand, men are known for canoe building and carving. Men carve items that would be used for practical purposes such as weapons and household items. Canoes are important in the Fiji society because these are used as the major mode of communication, transportation and food gathering. Fijian culture is also rich in terms of performing arts. They call the indigenous female dance as seasea (woman’s fan dance) and the indigenous male dance as meke wesi (men’s spear dance). The meke wesi is usually a narrative of important events in Fiji history such as wars, chiefly installation or sometimes, a scandal. Music in the Fijian culture consists of various chants which tells a story. This is their way of preserving their history. With the influence of European and Asian cultures, Fiji music has evolved and many songs now feature a mix of different languages with the melodies using traditional instruments.
