Moldova is a country that offers a unique perspective to visitors. A former republic of the Soviet Union, Moldova has more in common with neighboring country Romania than Russia. The country is famous for its wines and archeologists have found out that Moldova is one of the place where early humans have settled. The country also showcased some of the least known but highly significant cultural treasures.
Here are some of the sights that would awe even the most ardent world travellers.

Christ’s Nativity Cathedral

Christ’s Nativity Cathedral is located in the center of the Moldovian capital of Chisinau. Built in the 19th century, Christ’s Nativity Cathedral is the main place of worship for the country’s Russian Orthodox. Partially destroyed during the World War II, some parts of Christ’s Nativity Cathedral are still be renovated. Inside the stone brick cathedral are the altars dedicated namely to Christmas who is at the center. At the right alter is Martyr Nikita – the city’s patron saint – and on the left is Saint John the New.

Pushkin Museum

Pushkin Museum was once the house of Russian poet and writer Aleksandr Pushkin when he stayed in Moldova in 1820, after his expulsion from his native country. Pushkin Museum contains most, if not all, of his works. In addition, thousands more of Eastern European works in literature and the arts are also housed in Pushkin Museum.

Tipova Monastery

Tipova Monastery is on the far side of Moldova. It is located in the Dniestr River bank and quite secluded and for good reason. Tipova Monastery served as hiding place for 13th century Christians during the Tartar invasion at that time. The area is largely composed of three complexes that was build and completed in different centuries. The first complex – The Feast of the Holy Cross Church – was believed to have been built in the 11th century. The Saint Nicholas Church was completed sometime in the 14th to 15th century, while the third one was estimated to have been built in the 16th century and finished by the 18th century.

Manastirea Curci

After the break up with the Soviet Union, the Moldovans returned Manastirea Curci to its original state and purpose. Manastirea Curci is located in a scenic scene, in a pleasant garden near a peaceful lake. Visitors can also experience the mysterious powers of its “magnetic hill.” If you have car, put in gear and don’t step on the breaks, as almost immediately your vehicle will slowly roll uphill.

National History Museum

The National History Museum is conveniently located in the capital of Chisinau. The place contained a massive historical artifacts and artworks. The archeological section alone contained more than 17,000 artifacts dating back to the Stone Age, Bronze and Iron Age. Significant items dating back to Roman times to the Middle Ages are also included. One of the National History Museum’s prized exhibits is a large painting that measures 45 meters in length and about 11 meters in height, wherein two artists – Nikolay Prisekin and Alexy Senyenov – took eight years to compile the painting. They depicted a scene of 1944 battle that took place in a village called Leuseni situated on the River Prut.

Cricova Winery

Wine connoisseurs worth their salt would have heard of this place. It is in Cricova where an underground winery holds the second largest collection of wines in the world. The 125 kilometer winery currently holds more than a million wines, wherein most of them rare.

Old Orhei Archeological Complex

Old Orhei Archeological Complex is located at Trebujeni, which is around 60 kilometers away from Chisinau. Old Orhei Archeological Complex has given many archeological treasures ranging from early Stone Age tools to item from the Middle Ages.

Ethnography and Natural History Museum

Skeletal remains of dinosaurs and extinct animals that once roam prehistoric Moldova can be found in Ethnography and Natural History Museum. Interesting facts regarding the type of soil and plants that were present during the time of the dinosaurs are also included.

Botanical Garden of Chisinau

Botanical Garden of Chisinau is where more than 100,000 Moldavans visit annually to relax and relieve their stress away. There is plenty of space in Botanical Garden of Chisinau to find solitude, or you can even sleep in this more than a hundred hectare garden.

Milestii Mici

Moldova is probably a country of wine connoisseurs. Milestii Mici is currently considered as the world’s largest underground stockpiles of wines, numbering more than two million bottles. The underground street is wide enough to drive a car. You will definitely need one if you wish to see all the wine collections in this 120 kilometer winery of Milestii Mici.
