Should Social Security Disability be Taxable?

Does Social Security Disability qualify as taxable? This depends on the total income. The Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits are subject to taxation provided that your combined earnings are above some IRS thresholds. Combined income comprises of your adjusted gross income (AGI) and nontaxable interest and half of your SSDI benefits. When you claim yourself as an individual and your total income exceeds 25,000, then a section of your SSDI must be taxable. In the case of married couples filing joint, the amount is 32, 000. As a percentage of the total benefits, up to 50% or 85% of your SSDI benefits are subject to federal taxes.
