Exploring the Lifecycle of Filariasis: From Mosquitoes to Humans

Filariasis is a vector-borne parasitic disease caused by nematodes such as Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia spp., and Loa loa. Transmission begins when a mosquito ingests microfilariae during a blood meal. In the mosquito, larvae develop through two molts to the infective L3 stage. When the mosquito bites a human, L3 larvae migrate to lymphatic vessels, mature into adults, and produce microfilariae that enter blood or skin, depending on species. Symptoms result from lymphatic obstruction and inflammation. Diagnosis relies on blood smears, antigen tests, or imaging. Control includes vector management, mass drug administration, and mebendazole distributors supporting deworming programs in endemic regions.
