What is the duration of retention of the tax records after filing?

You should maintain your tax records at least three years of the date you submitted your return as any returns that were submitted within the three years can be audited by the IRS. But in case of overstatement of less than 25 percent income, retain records of six years. Unless you have filled in a return or you filed a false return, retain them indefinitely. W-2s, 1099s, receipt, and bank statements should also be kept the same time. It is also a good idea to keep the digital copies in a safe place with the backup. How Long To Keep Tax Records
